"I already had some plans but G-Yea spiced it up for me. I learned diplomatic

ways of making my story heard. I am planning on starting up a blog

which talks about environmental issues.”

"G-Yea! taught me how to use my voice, eyes and ears to advocate

to the world on solutions to environmental problem around us."

Ghanaian Youth + Environmental Artivism (G-Yea!) launched in August 2023 at Accra Girls' Senior High School and ran through October. A series of six workshops combined mini lectures, videos, discussion, and hands-on practice supported by the expertise and inspiration of a dynamic group of resource people:

  • Environmental Justice: Portia Adu-Mensah, climate change activist, founder & CEO of Dream Hunt

  • Storytelling: George Bosimpim, filmmaker & UniMAC instructor

  • Social Media: Lydia Forson, actor & influencer

  • Power of the Image: Yao Ladzekpo

  • Film editing: Eric Ofori Aryitey, film editor, owner of Cushy Designs

  • Artivism: Sela Adjei, Grin Ghana arts platform

  • Global Exchange: Environmental Program of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (NYC) - virtual

Following the workshops, participants worked individually or in small groups to create projects that would bring attention to an environmental issue of their choosing. Some assembled art pieces and wearable items from plastic and other waste material. Others produced 2-minute long videos espousing the negative impact of poor maintenance on communities while encouraging the adoption of practices better for people and the environment.

One of the most exciting outcomes of the project, and one the G-Yea! team hoped would come to fruition, is that Accra Girls’ has started a G-Yea! Club. Our team is now imagining possibilities for expansion into other schools, similarly facilitating 8-week long engagements to seed the environmental artivism of more youth.
